Submitting a SquidNet Render

Once your Maya scene is set up in its own folder, you are ready to submit your render to SquidNet.

Configure SquidNet

  1. Run SquidNet (squidnet-ui in the Applications folder)
  2. Go to the squidnet-ui menu and select “Preferences”
  3. Select “Job Submission” on the left sidebar and move the “Autodesk Maya” template from the Available column to the Listed Templates column
  4. Close the preferences window.

Create a project folder

  1. Go to the Project menu and select Project Manager
  2. Click the New Project button
  3. Give your project folder a unique name and click OK

Throughout these instructions, you will need the following path to the SquidNet projects folder, so you should copy it to your clipboard (⌘C):

  1. Minimize SquidNet and go back to the Finder
  2. Select the “Go” menu and choose “Go to Folder” (⇧⌘G)
  3. Enter the path to the SquidNet projects folder and click Go
  4. You should see a list of all the project folders. Browse to your newly created project folder.
  5. Copy everything from your Maya project folder to your Squidnet project folder

Submit SquidNet Job

  1. Go back to SquidNet, and reopen the Project Manager (from the Project menu).
  2. Double-click your project folder to select it.
  3. Click the New Job button
  4. Change the following settings
Template: Autodesk Maya
Scene Name: Something unique for you (like your name or username)
Job ID: Something unique for this job (like "JohnSmith-scene1")
Use all available cores: Checked
Skip Existing Frames: Checked
On Job Completion Do This: Don't remove from queue

Preset name: Select "Maya2018-MentalRay" or "Maya2018-Arnold" from the drop-down menu
Application: /Applications/Autodesk/maya2018/
Project Dir: Use the browse button to select your Maya scene folder on the server
Scene: Use the browse button to select your Maya scene file
Working Dir: Use the browse button to select your Maya scene folder on the server
Starting Frame: The first frame of your animation
Ending Frame: The last frame of your animation
Frames per Slice: Set to 10

The following are under "General Purpose"
Renderer to use: MentalRay or Arnold
Output Image Path: The path to the Output folder in your Maya folder
Format: name.#.ext for MentalRay, <default> for Arnold
Type: JPG or PNG for MentalRay, <default> for Arnold
Num Digits: Enough to handle all your frames (i.e. 4 digits allows for 9999 frames)

The following are under "Camera Settings"
Camera Name: The name of the desired camera in the Maya file, of leave blank for default
Width/Height: The image dimensions in pixels, or leave blank for default

There are lots of other settings available, but not all of them are compatible with Mental Ray. Ask your instructor if you are having trouble.

Once you are sure the job settings are correct, click the Submit button. SquidNet will ask if you want to save the job, click yes.
